3. Dirty Thunderstrom
The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, photographed on April 17, producing lightning, or “dirty thunderstorms." Scientists believe such electrical displays are generated when rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in a volcanic plume collide and produce static charges in the same manner that ice particles collide during thunderstorms.
